Provision of a market positioning report for an academic institute

 
 

Challenge


This Institute operates a portal for Knowledge Transfer, Expert Services and energy-focussed research activities within a Scottish University. It has a strong record of working with the private sector, but in the face of increasing competition in the market place it was keen to re-establish itself as a leading service provider. To this end, Orion Innovations was asked to review its current and future market positioning .

 

Approach

 

Orion Innovations used desk-based research and interviews with key internal and external stakeholders in order to:

  • Prepare a robust baseline of the current capacity and capabilities of the Institute to determine their short and medium-term commercial opportunities

  • Provide a high-level competitor analysis to identify other Scottish organisations offering similar products/services

  • Give an overview of the key drivers (regulatory, fiscal, commercial) of the demand for products and services in the areas identified during the baselining process

 

Outcome


Orion Innovations used the above analysis to provide an overview of the opportunity for the Institute in terms of market offerings, its Unique Selling Proposition (today and in the future), its competitive position within Scotland, and priority target sectors.
